Are you TATT (Tired all the Time)?

Are You Tired All The Time? If you are, you’re not alone. Far from it, in fact. It’s one of the common most reasons people go and see their doctor. The trouble is, most doctors can’t do much to help. That’s hardly surprising given they don’t learn much about non-specific conditions like fatigue during their medical training.

When someone suffers from persistent fatigue, many aspects of their life suffer. The quality of their work, the nature of their relationships or family life, their ability to go out, have fun, holiday, exercise – or even party – are often affected dramatically. Depression and anxiety may be triggers for fatigue, or they may be causes. The bottom line is that all kinds of events in life – ones that any healthy person would find manageable or even enjoyable – become a matter of trepidation. A doctor confronted with someone who exhibits symptoms of depression or anxiety often prescribes SSRI drugs (antidepressants). In the US, up to 10% of the population is taking an antidepressant at any one time. Things aren’t much different in most other industrialised countries.

You may also experience fatigue at certain times, and not others. OK, if you haven’t managed to get enough sleep, you’ve got good reason. But if you’re sleeping, or trying to sleep, and you just can’t seem to recover and feel energised, or you lose all your energy at particular times of day, such as after you’ve eaten, or when you’ve taken a limited amount of exercise, you’re starting to feel your fatigue and malaise a real problem.

There are always underlying reasons for fatigue-related conditions, but these can’t always be identified. In some cases, fatigue can be related to serious underlying diseases, which yet have been diagnosed, such as heart disease, thyroid diseases, type 2 diabetes, kidney or liver disease, or various infectious diseases, such as upper respiratory tract infections, gastric or duodenal ulcers, Lyme disease, pneumonia or periodontal disease. That’s why it’s always important to see a doctor or other qualified or experienced health professional to check for any possible, serious underlying causes.

While any of these conditions may be a cause of the fatigue, they may not be the sole cause and they may not have been the trigger that led to the disease in the first place. It may also be that the body struggles to resume normal, healthy function because of on-going mediators or perpetuators such as stressful life events (e.g. relationship or work-related challenges, financial difficulties, loss of a loved one), a poor diet or a particular nutrient deficiency, insufficient physical activity or relaxation, poor sleep quality, smoking, too much drink or other unhealthy habits.

Oftentimes however, the reasons for someone’s fatigue are complex, unclear and non-specific. Doctors and health professionals increasingly refer to this as ‘tired all the time’ syndrome, or TATT. Not for a lack of trying, the fatigue simply can’t be traced to a particular underlying disease. This is the case for over half the people who present to their doctors with fatigue — and the millions who don’t. Knowing there are some key things we can all do to help our bodies can be a lifesaver. We’ll give you more detail in upcoming blogs, but three key processes stand out as among the most important.

The first involves supporting the energy-producing ‘factories’ in our cells, the mitochondria. The second is about managing the amount of oxidative stress within the body. Both of these are strongly dependent on eating pattern and the quality of the nutrients you eat and absorb. It’s also about how you move, rest and sleep. The third key process is about providing the best possible environment for your body, one that nurtures it and allows it to function optimally. This means learning to be good to yourself, including eating as well as you can, taking particular supplementary nutrients, resting right and sleeping well, through to finding appropriate ways of being physically active and finding the best ways of transforming stress.

Varicose Veins – A.Vogel

Varicose veins are enlarged or swollen veins, visible through the skin as blue or purple swellings. Although they may be found anywhere in the body, varicose veins are most common in the calves and thighs. They may also have a bulging, lumpy or twisted appearance. The thickened or swollen parts of veins are known by doctors as varicosities. The word ‘varicose’ comes from Latin and means ‘dilated’ or ‘larger’.

This happens when veins lose their elasticity, become stretched or swollen. This leads to leakage of valves found inside veins, responsible for regulating the normal flow of blood towards the heart.

Who develops varicose veins?

Some people are more prone to the condition than others. Those who spend much of their day sitting, and in particular standing, are more likely to develop the condition. In addition, varicose veins can run in families, especially in the female line.

It is said that over 3 in 10 adults will develop varicosities at some point in their lives. Other estimates are even higher, suggesting that 40% of men and 32% of women aged 18 to 64 years suffer from varicose veins.

The most common cause of varicose veins in young women is pregnancy. It is thought that about 40% of pregnant women experience this, although these usually disappear after birth of the child.

What are the symptoms?

A feeling of aching, heaviness or tiredness may develop in the calves or thighs. Other symptoms of varicose veins include swollen ankles, burning sensation in the legs, muscle cramp or itching of the skin.

The symptoms of varicose veins vary from person to person. Usually the first signs are that affected veins becoming more noticeable through the skin. With time, they appear swollen, and may become itchy or slightly tender to touch.

Although the symptoms of varicose veins are unsightly and irritating, the condition tends not to be serious. However, serious complications can develop and these include varicose eczema, skin ulcers, thrombosis (abnormal clotting) and bleeding. If this is the case, you should seek medical attention.

Varicose veins in other parts of the body

Although varicose veins are most commonly found in the legs, they may appear elsewhere in the body.

  • Haemorrhoids (or piles) are varicose veins in the anus and rectum – the lowest part of the digestive tract where faeces leave. Although not often serious, they can be very painful. You may notice streaks of blood as you try to pass stool
  • Pregnant women may notice varicose veins in their legs but sometimes, varicose veins in the vulva or vagina, as the baby puts pressure on the pelvic region, restricting blood flow
  • They may also be found in the oesophagus(or gullet), the tube which connects your mouth to your stomach. This is known as liver cirrhosis and is usually caused by scarring in the liver resulting from hepatitis infection or excessive alcohol consumption
  • Up to 1 in 7 men develop varicose veins in the scrotum or testicles. They are not usually problematic and you may not notice any symptoms.

Prevention or treatment?

There are many measures you can take to help prevent varicose veins from developing or worsening. Most of these involve improving your circulation with regular exercise and eating healthily.

Treatment of varicose veins include conventional methods such as pressure stockings, lasers or, in severe cases, surgery. Additionally, many people find relief from using herbal remedies, in particular Horse Chestnut seed extracts, available in tablet form, or as a gel.

Should I go to the doctor?

A symptom of varicose veins you may experience is itchiness around the swollen vein. This occurs because blood leaks from the swollen vein, irritating surrounding tissues. If your varicose veins itch, you are more likely to develop complications. Many of these can, and should be treated, so it is worth making an appointment with your doctor.

The diagnosis is often clear as they are usually visible under the skin. However, there may be certain circumstances where you experience some of the symptoms of varicose veins, but are not sure if you have the problem. As with any unexplained symptoms, you should seek the advice of your doctor.

In addition, speak to your doctor if:

  • You have severe pain, discomfort or swelling in your legs
  • The skin over the vein becomes painful or irritated
  • You develop an ulcer (break in the skin)
  • Your varicose vein bleeds.

Horse Chestnut

A.Vogel insist that only freshly picked horse chestnut seeds are used to make Venaforce®. This ensures that the extract obtained contains the active ingredients that help with the symptoms of varicose veins.

Venaforce® and Venagel® Remedies

Venagel contains the extract of fresh Horse chestnut extracts and when used in gels is soothing, providing cooling relief to legs that feel weary, heavy and uncomfortable – fantastic after a night out or a day’s shopping. Weleda Shaving Cream

Juan, our Putney store supervisor says:”My favorite product at the moment is Weleda Shaving Cream. I have been using many of the regular foaming type for years and sometimes they irritate my skin, even if I have used it before without reaction. After being made aware of this skin issue I decided to look into the ingredients of some of these shaving creams that I used in the past and I then understood why my skin reacted badly from time to time.

Weleda shaving cream does not use any nasty ingredients such as parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, aluminum or alcohol that are very toxic and aggressive for the body. The main ingredients of this shaving cream are natural essential oils that come from almond extract, linalool or citronellol, among the others. These kind of oils are very gentle for the body to assimilate and nourish the rough or sensitive parts of the face.

Once I got my Weleda shaving cream and as I had some of the regular kinds at home, I did my own test. I put Weleda cream on half of my face and another half I covered with a regular shaving cream. Believe or not, Weleda cream was more hydrating and soft, plus it didn’t leave me with any redness on my face. However, the regular one left me, as usual, with redness and much less hydrated my skin. The difference can be noticed after the the first try. I can also say that the Weleda shaving cream has a great smell, it is so nice that after shaving many people asked me which fragrance I use. So, it could be a way to save some money on cologne – Two in one.

If you would like to get more information about Weleda shaving cream, please feel free to come to Panacea Putney. I will be more than happy to answer any question about this fantastic cream. I highly recommend it!”

Comvita Olive Leaf Extract

Comvita is a much loved brand in health stores, and this product is no exception. Our Watford store manager, Oana, loves Comvita Olive Leaf Extract capsules. She says: “Olive leaf has been traditionally used to support a healthy immune system and is gaining a widespread reputation for it’s year-round benefits. Comvita’s new formulation of the capsules contains 66mg of Oleuropein, as well as Zinc and Copper for added immune support. You only need to take one a day to help keep the doctor away!”

Comvita uses fresh-picked Olive leaf that is grown, harvested and extracted fresh on the farm in Queensland, Australia. This fresh leaf extraction system ensures high levels of Oleuropein plus at least 11 other naturally occurring polyphenols and the only brand to do this.

Polyphenols are compounds found in natural plant food sources and have antioxidant properties. Polyphenols play an important role in maintaining your health and wellness as they help protect the cells in your body from free radical damage.

Many people are quickly realising that Comvita Olive Leaf Extract Immune Support Capsules is a supplement with a wide range of benefits suitable for the whole family. While some people are using it throughout winter, many more are finding it improves well being all year round.

Weleda Moisture Cream for Men

Our Staff Favourite this week is from our head office.

Dana says: “One of my favourite skincare products is Weleda men moisture cream… and no I don’t use it myself! But my husband uses it and loves it. It was hard to convert him to a natural product as he was used to mainstream and highly fragrant men’s creams found in most chemists and supermarkets. But within a few days of using Weleda he was converted. He says the smell is refreshing and “wakes him up” in the morning. It soothes his skin after shaving, penetrates well and isn’t too heavy. Also an ideal size as he travels a lot and hate big bulky packaging!”

Weleda say that men care what they put on their skin – but they don’t want to make a fuss about it. Weleda uses decades of experience to formulate a highly effective range of fresh men’s grooming products. Easy to use and quickly absorbed

Ingredients are organic jojoba, sesame seed oil and extracts from marsh mallow to protect, soothe and moisturise the skin. It’s a quick-to use, no-nonsense moisture cream that smells great, too.

Father’s day is coming up on 19th of June – Why don’t you get dad a treat from nature.
